We packed up Elmo and Bonnie after 4 fabulous days in San Francisco and shipped them back to Massachusetts. Now it’s time to head off to Monterey, Morro Bay, and Big Sur.
Our first stop is in Monterey so we can meet up with Ellen’s cousin Rita and the whole Mobilia Family. We had a wonderful BBQ meal and some fun time with them before heading onward to explore the Pacific Coast Highway.
We set up camp in Morro Bay within walking distance of the Pacific Ocean. This resort provides the perfect location for me to explore this seashore tourist town by bicycle and it is an excellent base camp for a drive up the PCH.
The Pacific Coast Highway also known as Route 1 actually travels along 655 miles of the California Pacific Coast. The most famous and picturesque section starts in Monterey and Carmel By The Sea and winds its way southward between the coastal cliffs on one side and the steep mountainside on the other ending 125 miles later in Morro Bay.
This is no road for a motorhome but it is another perfect top down Mini Cooper cruise. The views along the roadway are indescribable as each hairpin turn reveals a new majestic vista. There are hundreds of spots along the side of the road to pull off and take pictures or just gaze at the beauty below. We stopped for a cliffside lunch near Big Sur and enjoyed a chicken sandwich and french fries for $65. You gotta love these California prices! Okay, now it’s time to turn around and head back to Morro Bay before moving on.
