My cousin Gordon, also known as “Gordy” or just plain “Gore” depending on which side of the family you’re on lives in the area with his wife Jill, and their two sons Trevor and Kyle. We always have a great time whenever we get together but too much time passes between gatherings. It's been 6 years since we've seen them.
This is our first time in the Phoenix area and we set up camp at Usery Mountain Regional Park in Mesa, AZ. This is a really nice county operated rustic park with an incredible sunset view over Phoenix. The area is really beautiful and the trip down through the mountains from Flagstaff was exciting. We even saw Saguaro Cactus for the first time (these are the cactus you always see in the Western Movies).
We woke up the first morning to the sound of Air Nailers. “They must be re-shingling the roof on the Main Lodge”. “Nope”, this is the Southwest where they love Cowboys, and Cowboys love guns! The sound we hear is the local Shooting Range right across the street.
We shared a couple of fun afternoons and several meals with the cousins while we were here including a dinner trip to Rustler’s Rooste a really fun restaurant built into the side of a mountain. It even has an indoor slide to take you down to the dining room if you dare, otherwise you can opt for the stairs instead. This is the type of restaurant only locals know about, How did we find out about it? Mike Corby told us!
In the middle of our stay here in Phoenix, we packed up and flew home to Massachusetts for a couple days to enjoy the company of our friends back home. It’s great to see everyone and we’ll be back for a week around Christmas.
Next stop… Tucson, AZ
