Ellen & Norman Go To The DMV

Once upon a time in a land so very far away called Florida, there were two weary people that had traveled a great distance from the Empire known as Massachusetts. They liked this oasis and began to stay there for long periods of time before returning to their native land. Eventually they learned that their Stage Coach, their Carriage, and even their Buckboard should carry the markings of this new land and forever erase the markings of Massachusetts.

The people were scared, very scared.

We had heard tales of wicked witches, mean overlords, and unfair governments. To make matters worse, we had borrowed money from the big bad banker for the Stage Coach and would need his permission as well!

It was a dark path we were about to travel down, but we knew it must be followed in the hope that all would not be lost. Although the path was long and dark we met many nice strangers along the way. We finally reached the castle to ask the King and his court what we would need to achieve our lofty goal. The servants in the castle were all very pleasant and willing to provide guidance but constantly gave warning of impending doom if procedures were not followed exactly as instructed. There was no threat of Dungeons or The Stretch Rack but we swore we could see those just behind the closed doors.

We found that the two empires, although similar in appearance, were very different in the information that they require. This forced us to find a local dignitary named Notary that could verify that we actually had a Stage Coach, Carriage, and Buckboard and he also needed to determine how far they had traveled. We gave Notary a few shillings for his trouble and thanked him for his service.

Then we needed to find a Very Strong Man who could lift the buckboard and tell us how heavy it was. Thankfully, he did not need to lift the Stage Coach which is much heavier. We gave the Strong Man a few shillings and thanked him for his service.

Next we needed to beg the banker for his permission but quickly found that the new kingdom must do the begging for us because the Banker is forbidden from dealing directly with people of our stature. The Banker did not require payment for this service as long as we promised to keep paying him monthly for the rest of our lives!

Now it is time to return to the castle in hopes of completing our task but our efforts are quickly thwarted. Although we have gotten permission from Notary, Banker, and The Strong Man, we still need to find a Nobleman that will certify to pay for any damages that we may cause when traveling through the Kingdom. The servants of the castle turn us away once again but we thank them anyway for sparing our lives.

We search far and wide and find a Nobleman willing to insure that we are trustworthy and deserving of entrance into the kingdom. We give the Nobleman ALL of the remaining shillings that we have and we once again head to the castle in hopes that we will be accepted. As always, the servants are helpful and hopeful of resolution to our plight but it is not to be. The servants tell us that we must bow before the kingdom of our previous land and beg them to release their claim to all of these vehicles. We are concerned that this may be difficult but are thankful when the kingdom of Massachusetts grants our wish.

We return to the castle of Florida much more weary than we first had anticipated, but now to our great joy we have fulfilled ALL of the wishes of the Kingdom and are now welcomed to travel freely once again. All of the townspeople turn out as we sing and dance and rejoice to our new found acceptance to the great kingdom of Florida.

And They All Lived Happily Ever After.

I too inhabited the kingdom in my early serfdom days and was forced to pay homage (and pieces of eight) to various functionaries merely for temporary thatched roof domiciles and passage on their wagon ways.
The Kings Court showed mercy when an accidental joust with a vassal of note occurred where the wagon way crossed paths.
Forsooth,it is a trying thing to do when learning the Way of the Oranges!
